Background and experience
Esther has a background in environmental sciences and epidemiology, health geography and public health. She has a Diploma in Geography from the University of Bonn, Germany and a MSc in Geography from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. Before joining the University of East Anglia, Esther worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Hygiene and Public Health, University of Bonn.

Work and interests
At CEDAR Esther studied for a PhD in the field of social and environmental interactions as determinants of physical activity at the University of East Anglia. The particular focus of her research was on processes of industrial restructuring and how this may be related to unexplained geographical variations in levels of physical activity in England. The PhD applied a mixed methods approach using GIS-techniques, statistical analyses and focus group research.
